Button Campaign

The value of community is an integral part of our mission, and the Button Campaign provides a tangible way to support organizations and groups on campus. These are to act as symbols of support and recognition to be worn on one's gown or backpack. This is also a project that is meant to bring forth more active leadership of OG council members to the broader Sewanee campus community.

The Button Campaign is led by Michaela James-Thrower c'24, Educational Resource Chair. The Button committee formulates, advertises, and sells buttons in collaboration with key groups on campus. These groups so far look like Sewanee’s Queer and Ally House, NAACP, and the Interfaith group which is connected to All Saints. Upcoming groups that will be participating in the Button Campaign include the Bairnwick Women's Center, the Organization for Cross Cultural Understanding. The goal for this campaign is to help discuss and raise awareness for all organizations on campus. When partnering with a group the OG sells buttons for individuals to place on their gown. All proceeds for this campaign go back to the partner organization and are donated to a charity of their choice. There is also always an event that occurs during this time period in which community members are able to learn more about this organization and engage in a strong dialogue.

"One of my jobs as DEI Chair is providing a space where groups and organizations that are a part of Sewanee can start to feel like they are Sewanee." -Halim Labi '22, past DEI Chair
