Rescuing a Patient

Bystander Awareness

The Order of the Gown is founded upon the value of community and education. Training for emergency situations both is a character-building skill as well as a preventative way to make our community safer. This is also a project that is meant to bring forth more active leadership of OG council members within education in the Sewanee campus community.

The Bystander Awareness Campaign is led by Jackson Deneka c'24, Co-Parliamentarian. Jackson has organized First Aid/CPR/AED classes to teach in the Easter semester to organizations ranging from Greek Life to the McClurg dining staff. This initiative has increased emergency response awareness through collaboration with multiple on-campus dining areas to display informational posters regarding how to assist someone who’s choking. This project seeks to provide life-saving skills without any added financial stress to members of our community, and such educational training will ensure those living on the mountain are protected.

"Academic success does not only lie within the confines of a classroom. It is how we apply such knowledge to our life that makes it count, and the skills a First Aid class contains has a direct impact on our community. If the moment were to strike, any person could become a first responder, and it is my desire to ensure this community is educated and prepared to save a life."
