English as a Second Language (ESL)

The Order of the Gown works to secure an equal and inspirational academic experience for all students to discover their calling outside of the gates. The English as a Second Language (ESL) initiative contributes to our EQB values by fostering a culturally diverse environment on our campus. This supports international students with academic resources to participate in an equal and inspirational Sewanee academic experience.

The ESL Initiative is led by Tuyen Bao Le '24, Sub-Chair. The Committee is working to create resources for students whose English is not their first language through collaboration with the Center of Speaking & Listening, the DEI Committee, the Office of Global Citizenship and the English Department. Short-term projects include direction towards digital and peer-assisting resources in Dupont Library and ESL training sessions for students and faculty which potentially involve multicultural organizations like themed houses. Long-term goal is to assist the DEI Committee in their intention in hiring an ESL specialist for Sewanee.
